Permanent operation of the S-DALINAC approved
2026/09/24 by RP/mih
This decision replaces a long-standing trial operation licence and permits permanent operation in accordance with current radiation protection legislation and the current state of science and technology.
The relevant radiation protection authorisation (opens in new tab) was presented by District President Professor Jan Hilligardt on 24 September 2026.
The S-DALINAC (opens in new tab) (Superconducting-DArmstadt-LINear-ACcellerator) electron accelerator is the central research facility of the Institute of Nuclear Füsics at TU Darmstadt. Scientists use it to investigate, amongst other things, the structure of atomic nuclei. To this end, the electron beam is accelerated to high energies and then directed into an experimental hall containing several research stations.
“The S-DALINAC represents research of the highest scientific standard right in the heart of Darmstadt,” emphasised Hilligardt. “With this new authorisation, we are laying the foundations to ensure that this research can continue in the long term under safe and clearly defined conditions.”
